Hey everybody,
We have added a lot of new guys over the past couple years. I just wanted to pass down some good forum etiquette.
#1: Forum user ID advice...
If you're observant you probably noticed that most of the users on our forum use there real name as their user ID. For example my real name is indeed Andy Blickley. So I use it as my forum ID so that people know who I am. Makes sense right? User names like "BallFlicker55" and "Awesomekidthatscool24" are not good forum ID's. If you have a nickname like some players, you could be creative and implement it into your user ID. Here's an example: Pete "El Rey" Montanez or Tim "Zeus" Trenary. Pretty easy right? Now you give it a try!
#2: Post Etiquette...
Forum posting is different from other internet communication mediums. Let's take instant messaging (or IM for short) for example. An appropriate IM message would be: "Hey sup, r u coming to the party l8er" or "Yo I g2g bro, ttyl lmao." These are fine responses for instant messaging. On the forum we need to be a little bit more conscious of what we post. You may be asking why? Because forum posts are communication logs that are relevant much longer than IM's and many more people will see them. Let me introduce Johnny. He's an okay guy, but he's new to the forum. Here's an example of a poor forum post from Johnny.
"Yo it cud be kewl if u guyz wud hav live telecasts of games n stuff. I wud like it so much lol. U guyz think it cud be kewl?"
What could Johnny have done to make his post more appropriate for the Palisades WBL forum and why was his post sub par? Outstanding question. Johnny's post gives the reader the impression that he is a tool. While this is most likely untrue, it is how we are going to perceive him.
Johnny should have made his post something like this...
"Hey everybody! It would be amazing if we could have live webcasts of our games. I think it would add value to our already awesome media arsenal! Thoughts?"
Easy enough right? Johnny will knock his next post out of the park.
#3: Don't Troll...
What's a troll? I thought it was a mythical being that lived under bridges, eats small children, and turns to stone in daylight. Turns out there are however forum trolls. Bad news is, you could be one. I know.. I know.. It's a dark path that anyone righteous human being wouldn't want to stroll down. Good news is, you don't have to be that jackass that does.
In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online forum. Trolls are also known to bait the normal forum poster into asinine discussions.
Here's an example:
Brett Posts a topic about recruiting new players to the league.
"....and we really need to do a better job of getting some new players into the league this season."
The thread (or string of posts about one topic)is going great. Then all of a sudden, a troll shows up...
"Yo u guyz suck. My shit is so big right now. It smells like shit! LMFAO!"
It's not hard to see that this post was off topic and could be offensive to other forum goers. Let's stay on topic and not offend too many people. Unless we are talking about balls or proper methods to duct tape our manhood properly to our legs.
In short, don't fucking troll.
Regards,
Andy Blickley
